This is the most amazing thing I've seen all day. Kyle Baker is offering his body of creator-owned work for free. This is one of my favorite artists OF ALL TIME, offering some of his greatest works to the world with no catch. I've read all of the books being offered with the exception of Special Forces (and now I can fill that gap).
I'd go in chronological order, though the undisputed critical classic is Why I Hate Saturn. Looking at the offerings really highlights Baker's range as a writer, from the blistering historical account of Nat Turner to the Biblical adventure King David to the silly one-panel strips of The Bakers. There's something to love in all of this stuff (I'm partial to the unbelievably gorgeous art in You Are Here). My only complaint is that some of these books weren't uploaded in the best quality, but it's free - what am I complaining for?
I count Baker as an influence on my own artwork, but it's a trickle-down influence that originates from Jack Davis. One of the few times I've ever been tongue-tied with a "celeb" was meeting Baker at a gallery showing and doing that horrible thing where you just sort of blurt out what an impact that person has had on you. Baker noticed my Popeye t-shirt and deftly changed the subject from himself to E.C. Segar before I scurried away, embarrassed. Way to go, John.
Anyway, read these. Baker is great.
